SEHO Long-term Projects:
As all public services have become non-existent in Somalia, NGOs like SEHO have taken up the public service provider role, which the centeral government of Somalia used serve. Accross Somalia, health (human and lifestock), education, water, sanitation, and all the other vital services you can think of, are initiated and sustained by the cooperation of local and international NGOs.
SEHO has been planning and implementing various projects in the city of Bardera in Gedo region. Since 2006, additional three cities in central and southern Somali are benefiting from SEHO support. Bardera Maternity Hospital (services from an extended MCH), first maternity services in all of Southern Somalia, was realized in 2006. The subsequent two years, the population of Bardera, mostly women and children, have come in droves to get prenatal, maternity and children's health services. East Bardera Mothers and Chilren's Hospital employs 12 people including nurses, midwives, assistant midwives, junior pharmacist and public health specialist.
East Bardera Mothers and Children's Hospital was the first project taken up by the founders and the volunteers of SEHO. As reports from 2007 and 2008 indicate, over 3000 people were served in both of these years. Nurses from Bardera Maternity Hospital serve outlying towns and villages during vaccinations campaigns. Stats from the hospital doesn't count such services in its annual report, served patients figures.
The latest support came from Somali-American Women Aid Project (SAWAP) and its supporters. These kind women who do many different volunteer programs supporting health, education and sanitation services in Somalia, have helped SEHO services in the past. Since earely 2009, SAWAP have contributed cash donations to the cause for Bardera Maternity Hospital. Their financial support paid expenses for one quarter during early 2009 FY.
The number of people who have directly supported this cause are too overwhelming. SEHO recieved all sorts of support including financial, technical, equipment as well as supplies and other forms of donations. Our supporters are mostly based in the United States from Ohio, Virgina, Minesota, Colorado and Arizona. Friends of SEHO from Canada contribute ideas and are future stakeholders (we hope to get medicine from there). Please read our supporters in the page titled SEHO Supporters.
Below are the various projects undertaken by SEHO since 2006. Some projects are still ongoing and need your support.
1. 2006-2010
Bardera Maternity Hospital
East Bardera Mothers & Children's Hospital - services onging since 2006 and hospital recently moved to new location near the Bardera Football Field. The relocation took place in June 2009. Maternity and Children's services have been the focus of Bardera Maternity Hospital, formerly East Bardera Mothers and Children's Hospital or EBMCH.
Plans for the Bardera Maternity Hospital during FY 2010 include the purchase of 2 ambulances, 2 power generators and extending services to 24 hours a day. As it stands now, more than women and children depend on Bardera Maternity Hospital for their basic health care services. The general hospital of the city of Bardera has been closed for more than a decade now.
Bardera Water & Sanitation Authority (BWSA)
Bardera citywide cleaning and clean tap water project. First citywide cleaning efforts started in the Deyr (fall) of 2007. All funding was made possible by SEHO. Since then, SADO and other organizations have followed suite in terms of making efforts to clean the city from everyday trash.
Bardera Water and Sanitation Authority- Maamulka Biyaha iyo Nadaafada Baardheere has initiated some of the most remarkable work in the city by hauling out trash which has been accumulating in some areas for a decade or more. The back wall of the largest Mosque in Baardheere, Baghdad Mosque - Majid Baqdaad, has been rubish dumping ground for very long time. Thanks to BWSA, all around the mosque has clean environment now.
2. 2008-2010
Bardera Polytechnic College - three phases (first two phases completed during April 2009). SEHO pays instructors incentives as well as study materials such as books, computers and other equipments.
West Bardera Maternity Unit - completed December 2008. This unit operates as part of Bardera Maternity Hospital. The creation of this unit on the westside of Bardera, in the absense of an ambulance, WBMU brought services closer to the residents of Bardera's westside.
3. 2009-2011
Bardera Veterinary Institute (part of Bardera Polytechnic College) Bardera Agriculture Institute (part of Bardera Polytechnic College)
4. 2006-2011 Kurmaan Creek Footbridge Project Kurmaan community which has over 7,000 residents suffer greatly each rainy season due to the difficulty in crossing the creek when it’s carrying water. The Kurmaan Creek water emptying into the Jubba River has dangerous currant and sometimes crocodiles swim upstream endangering lives. There has been a few animals eaten by the crocodiles entering Kurmaan Creek. There has been incidents envolving humans as well. The creek brings rain water falling on 30km up in the eastern hills of Bardera.
By some engineers estimates, less than $20,000 U.S will facilitate the building of permanent footbridge over the Kurman Creek. The village of Kurman is just behind the main Bardera Market. The main Bardera Market is on the north side of the Kurmaan Creek.
Using reliable, standard bridge building material for a footbridge, may cost as much as $200,000.00 US Dollars. Current estimatations will only result unstable footbridge which will eventually wash out into the river.
SEHO’s efforts, in informing the community and seeking support for construction funds has been an ongoing effort since the summer of 2006. Any donar group, agency or caring individuals can take up this cause. SEHO can furnish information and other help to any interested parties.
